by Giles Milton ; Read by Stephen Thorne ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2000
In 1616 Nathaniel Courthope claimed the small island of Run for the English East India Company and spent the next four years defending it against the Dutch who controlled the remaining Spice Islands--the only place in the world that nutmeg grew and also an excellent source of mace, cloves, and peppers. British narrator Stephen Thorne has a pleasant and agreeable voice. He conveys both the excitement of beginning a voyage to the East Indies and the somber realities of disease, torture, and death that accompanied such undertakings. The author gives meaning to the seemingly endless ventures by tying events in the East Indies to events in the New World. After listening to NATHANIEL’S NUTMEG, you will never again take the spices in your kitchen cabinet for granted.

The audiobook illuminates the misdeeds of malevolent marketers, sleazy lawyers, and unethical doctors.
Cassandra Campbell’s narration is a model of a nonfiction performance. Her reading of exposition is careful and convincing. She knows where to pause and how to move the action forward. Law professor Burch’s investigative report of the con men, grifters, and profiteers who took advantage of women who were harmed by vaginal mesh implant removal is deeply researched. The revelations of how these “professionals” colluded to scam these vulnerable women who experienced incontinence, pain, and emotional distress after their procedures is horrific. The patients whose mesh implants were removed often had no medical workups prior to surgeries and were charged egregious hidden fees. The text also exposes the legal system’s glacial pace.
