Narrator Inés del Castillo conveys the menace and tension in Whitten's intoxicating fantasy debut. Red--a Second Daughter of the Valleydan queen--is fated to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wilderwood. Once there, however, Red learns that her childhood lessons were nothing but lies. The Wolf is no monster, the legendary imprisoned kings are not gods, and Red herself is filled with the power to heal, rather than destroy. Del Castillo's voice is dark and seductive, with a rough edge that perfectly reflects the Wolf's ragged power and the unsettling nature of the Wilderwood. Her pacing is occasionally rushed, but her delivery is so attuned to the novel's intensity that listeners will be wholly captivated, and eager for the next installment in this enchanting series.

A theatrical approach and comedic timing make this a narration win.
Mark Sanderlin narrates this cozy gay romance about two bros on a quest. Juniper loves his life with his strictly platonic best friend, Mo; their cat; and his skincare routine. But when both men land in jail, volunteering to find a dragon is a promising alternative to imprisonment. Sanderlin’s narration perfectly suits the tongue-in-cheek humor. His delivery emphasizes Juniper’s melodramatic personality, while Mo has a deeper voice and a more leisurely pace, befitting a thoughtful character. When Juniper and Mo banter, Sanderlin seamlessly switches between the two. And as both bros warm toward each other, the romantic tension is amplified. Sanderlin’s voice for dragon child Bear is especially adorable.
