A swashbuckler of a tale! A great choice for a reluctant reader or anyone who enjoys a good adventure yarn. Especially recommended for fathers and sons listening together. Although this is the third in the series about 17-year-old John Spencer's romance with the sea, it's not necessary to have read the first two. In 1803 John sets out on his first voyage to the West Indies on his father's ship. Along the way he encounters scalawags, old friends, heroic sailors, and one of the vilest villains to grace the high seas since Long John Silver. Ron Keith is a consummate professional. He recounts this story with drama and theatricality. This ornate and old-fashioned adventure calls for a lush interpretation, and Keith delivers.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.

This story should be particularly alluring to adolescent girls although the fast-paced action and the nautical setting will also appeal to male listeners. Ages 12-adult.
