Will Patton is a superb listen. He combines passion, power, and pathos with exquisite voicing to bring this latest Burke mystery to even higher levels than listeners might be used to from these two accomplished storytellers. The complicated story weaves its way all over the Southwest and into northern Mexico with all the appropriate accents and dialects intact. There’s no need to be concerned about getting lost with Will Patton’s dependable voicing. However, he might have reviewed the pronunciations of the significant Korean landmarks that come up frequently in the story’s flashbacks. Patton will wind the listener up again and again as the plot twists and turns through an allegorical landscape rooted in the evil that men do and the good that opposes them. Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
