In this illuminating character study, two women, best friends and polar opposites, are "looking at 40 in the rearview mirror." Narrator Susan Denaker sounds believably horrified when hearing Madonna on the "oldies" station, flabbergasted when tantric sex is suggested, and nearly speechless when asked to welcome the needle at a B&C (Botox & collagen) party. Her timing with non sequiturs could cause new laugh lines to erupt. This book is lighter than cotton candy, and just as sticky in places, but tart enough to observe that "no amount of lasering could possibly peel off the years more effectively than seeing yourself through an old lover's eyes."

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
