In this memoir, the listener is treated to a child's view of leaving the home where she grew up and moving to a new place. Compounding her fears, she and her African-American family have to deal with the segregated South of the 1960s, where they cannot stop just anywhere for gas, food, or travel necessities. Myra Lucretia Taylor expertly delivers not only the child's voice, but also her fear and uncertain thoughts. Harrington's effective use of onomatopoeia and alliteration could result in a difficult read; however, Taylor's narration is smooth and distinct. Both historically significant and telling, this will become a favorite story to listen to over and over.
