Jason De León is a strong narrator of his own work, an eye-opening examination of human smugglers. Many of those he writes about are driven by poverty to join this dangerous trade in Honduras and Mexico. Both they and their customers try to avoid multiple risks, including arrest and violence, on their treks. De León, who spent time with his subjects over almost seven years, has just a touch of huskiness in his voice. His performance carries empathy for the people he is writing about, but he is not overly sentimental. He does an excellent job with dialogue, injecting humanity and personality into those whom many Americans see simply as criminals. This audiobook, with De León at the helm, is riveting.

Nathan Luwa’s mastery of Nigerian accents lends authenticity to his narration and humanizes the four digital scammers profiled in this nonfiction exposé. Flush with wired money and gift cards, these youths (nicknamed Yahoo Boys) spend their nights trolling lonely Americans on the internet and their days living off hotel room service, buying Gucci for girlfriends and watered-down champagne for friends. They share backstories of extreme poverty and an inability to envision a future; Yahoo Boys don’t save or plan ahead, living from one romance scam to the next. The author has a personal stake in all this—his mother gave thousands of dollars to a Yahoo Boy posing as a U.S. soldier—and he spent months embedded among Yahoo Boys in Lagos.

Listeners experience a boots-on-the-ground view via firsthand accounts from employees depicting their shared struggle at several globally recognized companies. The staffers represent the modern face of employment: college-educated baristas, technology representatives, and video game designers, all carrying heavy loads of college debt. Meanwhile, they face dwindling commitment from their employers who, more and more, communicate to workers that what they do has no value. Santana's voice embodies the anger and desire for change that motivates workers to come together. Listeners interested in the rise of powerhouse corporate brands like Starbucks and Apple shouldn't miss this audiobook.
