Exuding attitude with every syllable, narrator Guy Lockard brings the Track series across the finish line with this concluding volume. Lu is the fast, flashy "fine-o albino" co-captain of the Defenders track team. But lately he's been stumbling over hurdles both on and off the track. As Lu's understanding of family and integrity deepen, Lockard's energetic narration conveys the character's insecurity as well as his histrionic swagger. Similarly, Lockard makes each supporting character distinct, though the clear standout is Coach, who's all verve and emphatic enunciation. It's an altogether winning performance--"for real for real," as Lu would say--and a fitting conclusion to a series that will resonate with young listeners for years to come.

by Dan Shaughnessy ; illustrated by C.F. Payne ; read by Ken Coleman ‧ RELEASE DATE: N/A
Ken Coleman's expertise as a baseball announcer enriches this history of the Boston Red Sox since the sale of Babe Ruth to the N.Y. Yankees. He leads off with a grim account of this transaction, which started the curse that has plagued the Red Sox ever since. The sermon-like tone will amuse non-believers and comfort listeners who are certain the team is cursed. Like the ups and downs of Boston's play through the years, the narrator's voice fluctuates--exuberant and then despondent--in tone and tempo accurately reflecting the mood of any given baseball season. The narrator is very successful at conveying the emotional roller coaster ride Red Sox fans have endured as a result of the curse of the Bambino.

It was supposed to be the best summer ever for 12-year-old Trip, but his plans go awry in this production expertly narrated by Jeff Ebner. This is Trip’s last year to play baseball with his dad’s coaching and his best friends on his team. Ebner captures Trip’s disappointment when he learns his dad’s military unit is being deployed to a remote location. Trip feels extra pressure both at home, when his mother tasks him with supervising his younger sisters and aging grandfather, and on the field, where his slot as team manager is tenuous. And then a new girl player sparks discord within the team. Ebner captures Trip’s turmoil in this first-person account of rising to meet unexpected challenges.
