FRAMED IN DEATH

IN DEATH, BOOK 61

Narrator Susan Ericksen returns to this long-running series featuring Lt. Eve Dallas, who solves murders in New York City in the 2060s. This time, a failed artist is murdering street-licensed companions and leaving them outside art establishments, posed as Old Master paintings. Dallas and her partner, Peabody, are called to the scene. Dallas is married to Irish billionaire, Roarke, and Ericksen gives him just a hint of an Irish lilt. Ericksen has established voices for the cast of characters, ranging from the bouncy intonation of Mavis, Dallas's friend, to the gravelly timbre of Whitney, Dallas's boss. Ericksen exudes the arrogant petulance of the killer and the grief of the friends of the murder victims. Ericksen's performance will keep listeners entertained by old and new characters alike.

George Guidall returns to masterfully capture Sheriff Walt Longmire; his friend, Henry Standing Bear; and his foul-mouthed undersheriff and fiancée, Vic. Guidall also finds appropriate voices for the many new characters, including a 100-year-old monk. Longmire, investigating the death of the distinctly unpopular Pepper McKay, family patriarch, focuses on his four sons. When a second body is discovered, Longmire is drawn into a complex case that echoes Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. Guidall keeps perfect pace as tensions ratchet up with a killer on the loose and wildfires consuming the canyon. Listeners will feel the desperation as the fires close in. The real hero is Borax, the mule.

Narrator Will Damron returns to masterfully deliver this second installment of the Catalina series. As the audiobook kicks off, listeners are immediately drawn into a supposed smuggling drop at a remote airport in the Catalina hills. After the fallout from the airport operation, Detective Sergeant Stilwell, frustrated to be sidelined, focuses on a cold case that has him partnering with a crossover character from Connelly's other series, detective Renée Ballard. Fans will be delighted by the cameo appearance of Harry Bosch. Damron expertly differentiates the many characters, male and female, and powerfully ratchets up the tension.

A master crime writer is paired with a narrator at the top of his game.
