Gilli Messer gives voice to both a modern 30-something artist and a 350-year-old vampire in this romantic comedy. Cassie is being evicted and needs a place to stay right away. She answers an ad for a roommate--even though the rent is suspiciously low for a Chicago apartment with a lake view. Frederick J. Fitzwilliam has spent the last hundred years in the vampire equivalent of a coma, and he needs some human help fitting into the 21st century. As Messer portrays sweet, respectful, and hapless Frederick, the chemistry between him and Cassie is palpable. As Cassie teaches him how to buy clothes and ride the "L," her own life starts to fall into place, too. Overall, though, the audiobook doesn't live up to its fun premise.

The mythical realm of Skein is inhabited by vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, and Berserkers. Narrator Robert Petkoff is masterful navigating the wide range of characters, giving each a distinctive voice. He lends the werewolves a Scottish lilt, and his tone drips with evil as a particular vampire. The Accession, an ancient cycle of battle, is about to begin. As all the factions come together, connections are made: A vampire princess escaping her sadistic brother ends up wed to a Berserker. A werewolf finds his mate in a demon witch. A vampiress and an incubus form a partnership.

With a slip of the tongue, Roxie Mitchell unintentionally wishesto become the heroine of her favorite romance author's next book—unaware that it’s a crime novel. As Roxie finds herself escaping a murderer, stealing a car, and ending up in London to catch a serial killer, the hardest part is trying not to fall in love with the character of her dreams. Finke’s enthusiasm is infectious as she voices the cast of characters caught up in the adventure.
