IN HER SHOES

In a well-written journey into the labyrinthine workings of sibling rivalry, Jennifer Weiner follows sisters Maggie and Rose Feller as they struggle to find their way to each another. Before this can happen, they must overcome old angers and jealousies. While they were once close, a chasm that rivals the Grand Canyon now exists. Rose, overweight and plain, is a conservative, successful attorney. Maggie, slim and gorgeous, drinks and is promiscuous. Barbara McCulloh narrates in a pleasing voice that keeps the listener's interest. She doesn't force vocal characterizations but instead reads for intelligence and sense. When the sisters meet their estranged maternal grandmother, all three women undergo healing changes made more believable by McCulloh's controlled, unaffected performance.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
