Deja Barnes's attitude is understandable. She's living in a homeless shelter, her father is always angry, and she's starting school in a wealthy Brooklyn neighborhood. Additional stress comes as the curriculum focuses on 9/11. Deja knows nothing of this event because her father has been hiding his story. Jewell Parker Rhodes expresses Deja's strong feelings eloquently in her book. However, her overwrought narration seems as if she doesn't trust the power of her writing. Feisty, tough Deja sounds shrill and accusatory. Portrayals of Deja's new friends from Muslim and divorced backgrounds are presented more gently. While Rhodes's over-the-top delivery erodes the story's tone of questioning and diminishes the important theme of connection, Deja does soften by the book's end when she better understands her father.

Robinson makes listeners squirm with her performance of young campers facing a dystopian future.
Rioghnach Robinson channels middle school energy to narrate this story of Anna-Jane, who is excited to be returning to summer camp with friends. But this year will be different: News of a rapidly spreading virus is reported right before people outside camp start disappearing and mutated animals start appearing. The campers soon realize that no rescue is coming, and they must work together to survive while waiting out the virus. Robinson beautifully captures the emotional arc of the tweens, from delighted campers to terrified children to determined survivors. She conveys the thrill of young love and the volatility of friendship and believably characterizes both bullies and a science nerd.

Bramhall embraces the storytelling tone that has built this series.
Mark Bramhall, who read the first two audiobooks in this series, now brings listeners the final installment in a satisfying conclusion. His narration shows his deep understanding of the characters—Orris, a rat, and Timble, an owl—as well as their unlikely friendship. He excellently executes grouchy Orris’ outward crabbiness and his more vulnerable interiority. Bramhall portrays young, patient Timble’s affection for the owl and his desire for Orris to experience the joy of flight with him. By the audiobook’s end, both flight and trust are achieved and the pair shares a new level of happiness. The final scene celebrates the magic these tales have brought to devoted fans.
