Sweden enters the horror genre. This debut novel is a terrific story, ably performed by Steven Pacey. The novel focuses on 12-year-old Oskar and his friendship with his unusual neighbor, Eli, who turns out to be a vampire. Further, some of Eli’s victims, who do not even realize they’ve been transformed into vampires, go on their own rampages, which turn out to be quite gory. Pacey’s gravelly voice and protracted enunciation help extend the drama and keep the listener captivated. He’s especially adept at framing the relationship between Oskar and Eli, making the book enjoyable from start to finish.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
