C.J. Box writes about life in wild Wyoming, short stories of people living a rugged life by choice or by circumstance. David Chandler narrates in a rough-edged whiskey voice that suggests summer heat, bitter winters, and windswept prairies, guiding the listener through 10 adventures of men like Fish and Game Officer Joe Pickett. Chandler brings the listener into this strange world where, more often than not, men have to create their own justice. His performance of the economical stories, some rarely seen, is perfect. The tale of the frozen body of a Native American basketball player turned speed freak, her arm reaching through the ice of a lake in a final jump shot, is one of the most fascinating in the collection.

A powerful listening experience.
Two narrators seamlessly shift between the present and the past and back again as current and cold cases overlap, keeping the pace and tension at a fever pitch in Connelly’s latest. Titus Welliver returns to perform Harry Bosch as he is drawn into a case that takes him back to the notorious MacLaren Children’s Center, where he spent hours of his youth in “the hollow,” a small space under the staircase that served as a detention corner. Welliver is a perfect match for the aging Bosch, and he also convincingly delivers the female characters. Listeners will learn how Bosch’s experience as a ward of the state chiseled him into a justice-seeking adult. Flashbacks, masterfully narrated by Cameron Monaghan, fill in the emotional details of those scenes.
