Though Jonathan Lowy is an attorney, his second work eschews the courtroom in favor of a compelling historical novel focusing on the Gilded Age, in particular immigrant factory worker Leon Czolgosz, who assassinated President McKinley. Lowy is a talented writer whose research and love of history are evident. Here he tells a compelling story, although the book shifts frequently in time, making it a bit difficult at times for the listener to place all of the events in context. Stephen Hoye has an engaging style that allows characters to display their unique personalities. His performance is particularly effective in a book with a dynamic cast of characters drawn directly from the pages of history.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
