Narrator Shaun Taylor-Corbett uses various American accents and voices to re-create the Depression-era setting of this audiobook. Twelve-year-old Cal Blackbird lives a hobo life with his father, a Creek Indian and WWI vet. Cal's subtle Southern accent and polite tone contrast with the redneck twang of the locals they meet while riding the rails. Then Cal trades his freedom for the regimented world of the Challagi Indian Boarding School. Each of the various camp hoboes and Cal's schoolmates has a distinct voice. Taylor-Corbett's Blackfoot heritage is evident in the soft Native American accent he gives Cal's father. This audiobook presents an engaging and sympathetic view of early-twentieth-century Native Americans.

Cindy Kay narrates this first in a planned series. The story unfolds with the first meeting of the Skeleton and the Cat. The friendly Cat disturbs the Skeleton's solitary, peaceful home life, hoping to make a friend. Kay employs a perky, lighthearted voice for the Cat. He tries jokes, food, and dancing to make friends with the Skeleton, who does not joke, eat, or dance. She is aloof but never sounds unkind or impatient. As opposites often do, they become friends. Kay's narration is quiet, slow, and comforting, but unfortunately, some of the humor is visual and doesn’t translate to the audiobook.
