THEN WE CAME TO THE END

Fans of "The Office"--American or British--will enjoy Joshua Ferris's take on working life. This debut novel is written from a plural first-person viewpoint, which is a bit odd at first but soon becomes transparent and integral. Ad agency employees struggle to create a humorous breast cancer awareness campaign while dodging the lay-off ax. The characters are recognizable office personalities, and Deanna Hurst's narration gives each character life without going overboard with different voices for dialogue. In other words, like the characters themselves, the voices all sound different and the same, simultaneously. With Hurst playing Ferris's dry, sharp humor perfectly, listeners will be sorry to hear the story come to an end.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
