After Charlie's sister dies, her ability to see the dead leads her into a Chicago way station for souls beneath Lake Michigan. There, she becomes caught up in a struggle for humanity between the station's ferryman; his daughter, Nera, a ferryman-in-training; and an imprisoned demon. Dorcus gives Nera a tone of brightness as she loses her naïvete through various revelations and a budding attraction to Charlie, portrayed by Wilson. As the grief-stricken and guilt-ridden Charlie searches for her late sister's spirit, soul-devouring "Haunts" sent by the demon needle her with their raspy, creepy voices. Wilson's performance adds vulnerability and hope to the courageous Charlie. Together, both narrators shine.

Fred Berman brings to life the story of Luke Teivel, the son of Lucifer, who has been kicked out of hell and is now working as a detective for Infernal Affairs in Savannah, Georgia. Luke's new partner, Sorcha O’Malley, who can see ghosts, is coping with the murder of her twin sister. College students are being killed, and someone is trying to frame Luke for the murders. Berman ably handles a variety of creatures, from Luke’s hellhound mother to his imp companion, Helly, to the witches he interrogates. Berman gives Luke a deep, masculine voice that turns menacing when called for. He has a comedic touch when performing the demons Luke has imprisoned in his office wall.
