This lovely debut novel spans a decade in three tangentially interlocking stories concerning the McLeod family. The first is about Paul McLeod, a recently widowed father of three young men, who is sorting out his feelings about his marriage while vacationing in Greece. The second is about his son Fenno, a gay, reserved bookstore manager transplanted to New York. And the third concerns Fern, an artist coincidentally encountered by both father and son. The stories are ruminative, mournful, and deeply affecting. John Keating has a melodious Scottish accent, and his American accent is convincing as well, though he tends to make everyone on this side of the Atlantic sound gay.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
