After a century in postapocalyptic Texas, people have become complacent about the “virals” (vampires) beyond the walls of the cities and have begun to move outside. This book plays to a number of Scott Brick’s strengths as a narrator—especially his prodigious ability to deliver detailed exposition as skillfully as he does fast-paced dialogue and action. He’s also expert at portraying the emotions of characters. As Fanning (Patient Zero) tells the story of how he was infected as a viral, Brick controls the suspense masterfully. The last in a trilogy, CITY OF MIRRORS stands on its own, although the background of the other books likely would be useful.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
