This is a great choice for children and adults to enjoy together. Hannah Gold lives with her Aunt Rose and two sisters in the tenements of Boston in 1918. Her parents are off fighting WWI in Europe. Hannah has promised to take care of her little family, but how can she protect them from the deadly influenza epidemic sweeping the country? There's lots of great history to be soaked up here through a moving and exciting story. Karen Hesse has a gift for drawing sympathetic, multilayered characters. Narrator Suzanne Toren differentiates each character with voice, mood, and timing. She never rushes a character, and the older characters deliver slow cadences that make them very believable.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
