Lorna Raver has a voice that's rich and layered, and this audio demands it. She starts by fully portraying two very different protagonists. Intelligent, young Rosa has a widowed Italian mother actively involved in the 1912 Lawrence, Massachusetts, textile strike. Jake, a poor Lawrence native, worries about feeding his growling belly, escaping his drunken father's belt, and getting away with stealing money from the church poor box. Raver defines a whole host of Massachusetts characters; there's Rosa's pinch-faced teacher, outside agitators, and the Irish priests who'd like to change Jake. A new set of characters and emotions surface when Rosa is sent to live with an Italian couple in Vermont and Jake poses as her brother.

Joshua Quinn narrates this short book featuring Waffles, a friendly dog who wants a hug, and his haughty housemate, Julius the cat. Quinn gives each a fitting voice—eager and goofy for Waffles, slow and somewhat disdainful for Julius. The two interact in typical cat and dog fashion. Classic cartoon-style sound effects accompany Waffles' attempts to hug his friend. Boings, zings, cymbal crashes, howling, meowing, and more punctuate the music and narration. Julius is not interested in hugs. After a day of trying, Waffles finally settles down for a nap to the sound of a music box lullaby. A tired Julius snuggles in beside him.

A fresh, dynamic interpretation of Woodson's poetry.
Woodson originally narrated her memoir in 2014, and this updated production features a lively chorus of voices, a new bonus chapter, and testimonies about the legacy of Brown Girl Dreaming. The audiobook opens with spare guitar music, and Woodson narrates her new, emotion-filled introduction. The chorus—Denée Benton, Marley Dias, Dominique Fishback, Big Freedia, Montego Glover, Nicole Ari Parker, Tika Sumpter, and Lena Waithe—then jumps in, each contributor delivering one poem and passing the mic to another voice for the next. The variety of voices adds a little spice, as their narration styles are very different from one another. Snappy musical interludes by Toshi Reagon feature before each section.
