Poor Denver. First, she’s ostracized after being accused of betraying her best friend, and now she’s part of a group of teens who were swept into the Pacific Ocean after a tsunami struck the California coast. Allyson Ryan deftly narrates this darkly humorous story of the social dynamics of a group of teenaged castaways. The story skips through time, keeping up with the present of the lifeboat survivors, who include Denver’s ex-BFF and current nemesis, Abigail, while also unraveling the explosive events that led to the detonation of Denver and Abigail’s friendship. Ryan submerges listeners in the lifeboat’s brutal realities while convincingly voicing the teen emotions that come into play. Parks’s story is unique, irreverent, and definitely worth a listen.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.

This story should be particularly alluring to adolescent girls although the fast-paced action and the nautical setting will also appeal to male listeners. Ages 12-adult.
