Tory Brennan, the smarty-pants niece of forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, is living on an island off the coast of South Carolina with her father, a marine biologist, following the death of her mother. Cristin Milioti’s strong, clear narration is perfectly suited for the energetic voices of Tory and those involved in this science-fiction murder mystery. Tory and her friends, all science geeks, rescue a dog being used for medical testing, exposing themselves in the process to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus, which tremendously heightens their senses and reflexes. Milioti engages listeners in the fast-paced adventure and adds realism with her matter-of-fact delivery. Appropriate music adds drama to the tense pivotal scenes.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
