Narrator Tanya Eby's smooth, pleasant voice breathes life into this lovely story of faith and learning to love again. Having suffered a miscarriage and then discovered her husband in bed with another woman, Jill runs home to Sparkle, Colorado. There, she helps care for Cassie, a young girl grieving the loss of her mother. Together both begin to heal. Eby uses tonal differences to portray the unique characters who inhabit the ski town of Sparkle. She is especially successful in her portrayal of Jill's male roommates and the "trashy neighbors" who inhabit the "Kennel," a trailer akin to a frat house. As Jill encounters dubious male philosophy about why men act the way they do, she finds real friendship.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
