LIGHT IT UP

An exceptional group of narrators is on display in a story that focuses on the shooting of a 13-year-old African-American girl by a white police officer, and the aftermath of the incident. The story's characters are diverse, and listeners will have a hard time believing there are only 10 narrators. As many of them deliver multiple parts, it sounds like a fully acted drama. Korey Jackson is the standout with his performance as "the Witness." This character's perspective is written in the second person, and Jackson uses his talent to make the listener feel every bit of the man's fear, pain, trepidation, and disgust. Listeners can't help but feel as if they themselves are the character--just as the author intended.

Stunning. Brilliant. Vulnerable. Righteous. Zeno Robinson’s dynamic narration makes this clever political and environmental thriller a tour de force. Benton Young, a love-struck high school senior, posts an earnest and passionate online plea for young people to stand up and demand better for their future. His post galvanizes a youth revolution, and Benton is elected president of the United States. As the movement spreads across the world, more young people are elected to lead nations. As Benton faces roadblocks from problematic adults in government and complicated geopolitics, he realizes that building a new world order is hard—and deadly. Robinson’s nimble and dynamic performance is accompanied by newscasts, social media posts, and intelligence reports, all delivered by a full cast. Listeners will have lingering thoughts about the role we play in our own future.

A stellar, immersive auditory experience. (Thriller. 14-18)

Katharine Chin masterfully conveys the many tensions of Lucy’s story. Found in a canoe floating to Orcas Island off the coast of Washington state and raised by a kindly benefactor, Lucy has always wondered about her parents and her heritage. She’s planning on heading off to college to make a fresh start—until she comes upon her benefactor’s severed head and is named heir of his estate. Chin’s propulsive narration plunges listeners into Lucy’s search to solve the murder and uncover the secrets of her origin; explain her connection with animals, including orcas; determine whom she truly loves; and find her place in the world.

Chin’s narration balances a dramatic, fast-moving plot with lush descriptions and poignant historical details. (Historical mystery. 12-18)
