The author spends time with a high school football coach and his team in New Orleans, and the result is more of a socioeconomic portrait than a book on football. It's an excellent immersive piece of reporting whose seriousness comes across in every one of narrator Ryan Vincent Anderson's words. The plights of players with often-challenging home lives demand a calm and serious tone, and Anderson delivers. Coach Brown's words to his team--raw, disciplinary, harsh at times--come across with the commanding authority he carries, thanks to Anderson's narration. Note: The N-word is used often, and bleeped, which doesn't work because it forces brief interruptions, and you can still hear the word. But it doesn't mar the narration or the importance of this comprehensive, and enlightening, story.

Bennett’s narration elevates an already entertaining audiobook.
The host of the soccer podcast Men in Blazers narrates with a high-energy, animated style that immediately draws listeners in. Author Bennett details his recollections of each World Cup since he was a boy in this wonderful memoir that is at times laugh-out-loud funny. Every sentence of this audiobook is infused with his Liverpudlian accent, and his storytelling alternates between self-deprecating and uproariously funny as he chronicles the highs and lows of being a soccer fan. Soccer aficionados, whether they’re die-hards or casual fans, will appreciate Bennett’s work and his passion for the sport he loves.

Epplin’s second book lays out the parallel stories of two basketball players—Moses Malone and Julius “Dr. J” Erving. The biographical portraits paint a picture of two different men whose careers converged when they were both on the 1983 champion Philadelphia 76ers team. Terrence Kidd narrates with the perfect amount of emotion, offering slight accents or different vocal inflections when players and coaches are quoted. Between Epplin’s solid research and fine writing and Kidd’s invested narration, it’s a wonderful audiobook for anyone who wants to glean what 1970s and early '80s basketball was like.
