The lines are damaged, the ever after is shrinking, and witch demon Rachel Morgan must fix the problem or die for her part in causing it, while falling in love with a complicated elf. Marguerite Gavin’s polished, pleasing voice offers a multitude of variations for the many characters in this complex story, from busy pixies to flying gargoyles. The long production and many subplots can challenge all but the most dedicated listener, but Gavin’s professionalism keeps it fresh throughout. In the final few hours, a few occurrences of odd phrasing suggest that even she has had enough, but devotees of the series will find this installment compelling. The gods might be sleeping in this vibrant fantasy novel, but Joe Eyre keeps listeners wide awake with an electric performance. As a mortedant, Irody Hasp reads dead people’s thoughts. When a simple job turns deadly, however, Hasp gets accused of murder and must work quickly to avoid the gallows. As he hunts down the real killer alongside his spunky new apprentice and a giant warrior guard, he soon unveils a larger and more sinister plot. The poor of the lower levels of the tiered city are threatened, and Hasp and his newfound friends must thwart the bad guys before the gods awaken. Hasp’s world is equally odd and engaging, and Eyre explores every inch, providing various voices to round out an eclectic group of characters.

When a powerful new ghost appears and starts drowning residents, then claims to know Mercy, the mystery of her past slowly unfolds. Naudus’ narration will tug at listeners’ heartstrings as the main characters experience shocking, horrific betrayals and trauma. Her intensified pace reflects the fierce anger and high action, keeping listeners on edge. The whispery voice Naudus uses for ghosts easily differentiates them from the living. When the narrative shifts to a second-person point of view, Naudus adopts a compassionate tone.
