Bianca is devastated when the hottest guy in school calls her “The Duff” (designated ugly fat friend). Ellen Grafton perfectly matches Bianca’s caustic tones as she attempts to recover from the huge blow to her self-esteem, cope with her parents’ messy divorce, and avoid developing a crush on the worst possible guy. In contrast, Grafton’s skill falls somewhat short at creating distinguishable and fitting voices for secondary characters, including that of Wesley, Bianca’s nemesis and crush. But this weakness doesn’t detract from Bianca’s compelling story as she attempts to choose between the boy who treats her well and the boy who makes her heart race.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
