Lowman's extraordinary performance transports listeners to the charming Manhattan enclave where Colwin's characters continue to enchant. There is a lovely continuity to Colwin's stories, and Lowman's pitch-perfect characterizations and witty delivery of dialogue captures this privileged world where creativity, science, and delicious food predominate. Lowman is sharp-edged but sympathetic as she portrays Jane Louise, a 30-something book designer who has never felt settled except at work who falls in love with and marries Teddy, a chemist from small-town New England who has his own challenges. Lowman brings forth the novel's understated clarity and precision. What a treat it is to have Colwin's words delivered with Lowman's delicate care.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
