PROPAGANDA GIRLS

THE SECRET WAR OF THE WOMEN IN THE OSS

Samara Naeymi delivers the untold story of four courageous women who played a vital part in winning WWII. Although they came from diverse backgrounds--Hawaii, Czechoslovakia, Tokyo, and Germany-- these women were all members of the OSS, the U.S. intelligence agency that was the forerunner of the CIA. They were responsible for producing varied pieces of propaganda designed to reduce the morale of Axis soldiers, making them easier to defeat. Naeymi's mesmerizing narration takes listeners into the heart-stopping intrigue and action of nations at war and into the souls of women with cool demeanors and spines of steel. Naeymi highlights the characteristics of the principal characters while also focusing on their individual professional skills, such as foreign language prowess or reporting.

    AMONG THE PORCUPINES

Carol Matthau epitomizes a glamour and lifestyle not associated with the 1990's. Here is a life of privilege, tragedy and worry about what friends would think of her new frock or lover. Matthau possesses a voice and delivery that simply could not be improved on. In her coy whisper, she tells compelling stories involving everyone from William Saroyan (husband #1) and Truman Capote to Carson McCullers, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Walter Matthau (husband #2). This excellent audio presentation will leave you wanting to read the entire book to discover what juicy tidbits were left out.

Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster fought a lifelong battle for credit, recognition, and compensation. Superman gave birth to the superhero genre in 1938 and spawned comics, toys, television, and movies. Dustin Naylor’s narration is both exciting and faithful to the business of comics and contracts. The story involves organized crime and corruption that even Superman would have difficulty fighting. Author Bernhardt focuses mostly on Siegel, but both he and Shuster lived much of their lives in near-poverty, while DC Comics raked in millions for their creation. As the two men entered their golden years, new executives at DC were more appreciative and negotiated a fairer settlement.

      A fascinating examination.
