Brian Nishii reprises his narration of HIROSHIMA, the first of a two-volume series that recounts the atomic bombings of Japan in August 1945. Author Sheftall draws on extensive interviews with those who survived, providing detail on the day-to-day lives of the Japanese and a history of Japanese relations with the West. He also provides details on the Americans involved--giving an in-depth description of the U.S. air campaign against Japan as a whole, not just the Nagasaki attack. Nishii's pacing, inflection, and pronunciation of Japanese are flawless. All of this adds up to a top-notch narration. As was the case with the first volume, it would be nice if there were some way to see the photos, maps, and bibliography included in the print edition.

    AMONG THE PORCUPINES

Carol Matthau epitomizes a glamour and lifestyle not associated with the 1990's. Here is a life of privilege, tragedy and worry about what friends would think of her new frock or lover. Matthau possesses a voice and delivery that simply could not be improved on. In her coy whisper, she tells compelling stories involving everyone from William Saroyan (husband #1) and Truman Capote to Carson McCullers, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Walter Matthau (husband #2). This excellent audio presentation will leave you wanting to read the entire book to discover what juicy tidbits were left out.

Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster fought a lifelong battle for credit, recognition, and compensation. Superman gave birth to the superhero genre in 1938 and spawned comics, toys, television, and movies. Dustin Naylor’s narration is both exciting and faithful to the business of comics and contracts. The story involves organized crime and corruption that even Superman would have difficulty fighting. Author Bernhardt focuses mostly on Siegel, but both he and Shuster lived much of their lives in near-poverty, while DC Comics raked in millions for their creation. As the two men entered their golden years, new executives at DC were more appreciative and negotiated a fairer settlement.

      A fascinating examination.
