Maeve Binchy has a deft touch with her characters and effortlessly involves her readers in the multiple layers of their lives. In the audio format, skilled narrator Katherine Borowitz unfolds the story of Ria Lynch and her home on Tara Road, Dublin. She uses shades of subtle characterizations, as the many people of differing ages take part in the life on Tara Road. Portraying the characters in an elemental way, she captures some small pattern of speech or cadence that makes them recognizable as they come in and out of the story. These portraits are highly effective over the long story. The luxury of time spent with this unabridged version provides the reward of savoring all the details and humor of Binchy's story.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
