David Aaron Baker fashions the perfect voice for Adam Newman—loquacious drunk, hopeless dreamer, scammer, prolific liar, perpetual impersonator, and big-hearted fool. Newman just can’t stop trying to solve everyone else's problems even if it means masquerading as a doctor, minister, police officer, or whoever is momentarily needed. All the while, he endeavors to reignite his previous marriage, reclaim missing diamonds, and unveil the shadowy group trying to buy up Central Florida. Some listeners may find the female voices too animated on occasion, but generally the words roll off Baker’s tongue in a languid Southern drawl with pitch-perfect lilts.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
