Although Lionel Asbo (who changed his name to match his recurring “Anti-Social Behavior Orders”) is a dominant figure in this novel, it is really the story of his nephew, Desmond Pepperdine. Des has to deal with his uncle, a small-time criminal, two pit bulls, and even his uncle's sudden lottery winnings while trying not to follow the family traditions. Alex Jennings changes accents more than voices, but the listener is never in doubt about who is speaking or what class he or she comes from. In fact, the reading is better than the book, which steamrolls along until it suddenly runs out of steam. Until then, though, Jennings's portrayals of Lionel and his circle are tremendous fun.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
