Peter Noble does a beautiful job narrating Martin Walker's latest Chief Bruno mystery. His French accent (essential for the Perigord setting) is graceful and trustworthy, and he differentiates personalities convincingly. By this time there are quite a few repeating characters in this series, with as much texture provided by friendships, foodstuffs and how to cook them, and St. Denis's Christmas celebrations as by the puzzle Bruno must solve. (A successful and prosperous woman killed herself after a miscarriage. Everyone loved her. Nobody much likes her toyboy husband, and the deceased apparently didn't either, but is he guilty of something?) There is also a piquant new possible love interest for Bruno and for added spice, a parallel romance between the pair's charming and age-appropriate basset hounds.
