When Minneapolis private investigator Nils Shapiro accepts an assignment in L.A., he expects to find a quick answer to the question of what 30-year-old Ebben Mayer is spending his inheritance on in the movie business. Narrator Bronson Pinchot enlivens Shapiro's breezy witticisms with the tone of a guy who doesn't take himself too seriously but insists that his own sense of justice be met. Shapiro's sidekick and bodyguard, a gentle giant, is voiced with such whispery sensitivity that his dialogue is difficult to hear. As Shapiro explores the dubious world of film production, most Mayer's associates turn out to be colorful women, and Pinchot performs their voices in a richer timbre. Shapiro suspects that a murder is connected to Mayer's newest project, and his investigation puts his own life in danger.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
