She infuses these stories with a conversational tone that matches the well-researched stories of girls we know (like climate activist Greta Thunberg) and those we don't (like education activist Fay Ordway and women's rights activist Alice de Rivera). The girls profiled were integral in fights for voting rights, abortion, climate change, racial justice, and more. This audiobook shares stories of these girls who refused to be silent, obedient, and remain on the sidelines. Their contributions are often erased, and they deserve to have their stories told. A compelling, inspiring listen.

Author Bordewich frames his chronicle of the exhibition by focusing on four key figures—President Rutherford B. Hayes; Alexander Graham Bell; railroad magnate Tom Scott, who spearheaded the fair; and sculptor Edmonia Lewis, whose work broke racial and gender barriers. Narrator Sean Patrick Hopkins’ conversational tone perfectly suits the material. He adds a bit of lilt for humorous and ironic passages. His pace makes it easy to follow the material, and the author’s writing style adapts well to audio.
