Robin Miles is a performer who never disappoints, and this novel is another opportunity for her to shine. OCTOBER SUITE illustrates the life of October Brown, a young African-American teacher who loves her job and the independence it affords her in the Midwest of the 1950s. October’s past has been bittersweet; she is haunted by the sudden death of her mother and the disappearance of her father yet buoyed by the support of her aunts and her sister. Her future looks bright until she is won over by the charms of a married man, a man who leaves her pregnant and afraid. A strong, well-developed plot makes this novel a pleasure to hear, and Miles brings the cast of characters to life with her skill as a reader.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
