Grant Cartwright’s flowing narration makes for easy entry into Melina Marchetta’s richly imagined fantasy world. Froi, a minor character in FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK, returns as hero in the second Lumatere Chronicle. A linguist by gift and assassin by training, Froi is sent to kill the royals of Charyn who threaten his adopted home. But the unsuspecting Froi is confronted by confusion about Quintana, Charyn’s last-born princess and prophesized redeemer, as well as by his own damaged nature and hurtful past. Cartwright doesn’t shy away from intensity in his portrayals. He captures Quintana’s mix of fury, madness, and vulnerability and gives context by showing the abuse surrounding her and the tenderness she provokes in Froi. Cartwright’s pacing increases the drama and provides a break in descriptive sections.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.

This story should be particularly alluring to adolescent girls although the fast-paced action and the nautical setting will also appeal to male listeners. Ages 12-adult.
