There's incest, religion, voodoo, philosophy, family troubles, politics, death and birth, true love, and--of course--plenty of sex. This Oprah Book Club selection is a good, old-fashioned soap opera, but a splendidly written one. Melinda Haynes crams her small-town, mid-century setting with fascinating, well-voiced characters, black and white. Their very names show Haynes's craft with words: Valuable Korner, Even Grade, Joody Two Son. Reader Nana Visitor brings every one of them to vigorous life. Curiously, Visitor, best known as a cast mem ber of "Deep Space Nine," severely restricts the range of pitch and inflection in the narrative. But her skill with dialogue, and the powerful writing itself, compensate for that minor cavil.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
