Billy Chapel, a seventeen-year veteran with Hall-of-Fame stats, pitches the final game of his career. Shaara, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of THE KILLER ANGELS, switches between the present and the past to reveal the path that Chapel took to reach this point in his life. Overall, Jason Culp does a good job with this program. He seems at his best during Jeffrey Shaara's poignant introduction, which explains his late father's love of baseball. And he does a good job with the narrative part of the story and the voices of the supporting characters. But it's when he speaks in Chapel's voice that he seems a bit flat, not giving Chapel the distinctive voice that he deserves.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
