Sheriff Beauregard "Bo" Handel of East Texas is the down-home hero of this audio mystery. James Jenner narrates with an honest tone, adding folksiness to the humor between the hard-hitting scenes. He uses a gravelly tone with perfect pacing for Bo's dialogue and thoughts. Bo's a guy who firmly believes he's doing the job the voters elected him to do. As newcomer Dr. Afton Spencer builds a white supremacist compound, the crime rate rises--a black deputy is shot, and a young woman disappears. Bo's policing style is challenged when a multiagency task force is brought in to help. Family drama with his son and a new love interest add dimension to Bo's character.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
