THE GARDEN ANGEL is a Southern novel with an engaging sweetness that never overpowers. Unlike some contemporary Southern works, Friddle's novel is offbeat without awkwardness. It depicts local flavor without clichés and is distinctive without forcing the point. Julia Gibson, too, captures the essence of the Southern voice without the distraction of too many contrived accents. The story's point of view shifts from one chapter to another, and Gibson never misses a beat with her subtle vocal changes. As two very different women, Cutter and Elizabeth, struggle to find security and contentment in their respective lives, they realize that some changes must be endured, for better or worse.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
