Narrator Jessica Lawshe’s smooth, graceful voice is perfectly suited to this understated and beautifully written story about 16-year-old Eliza, who wants to leave her Amish world for a summer and work as a nanny for a family in Chicago. Lawshe’s deliberately placid, steady delivery brings across Eliza’s composed, sweet-natured personality as well as her naïve wonder as she discovers the ways of the world outside her community. Eliza is caught between the two worlds and has to choose which one she’ll call her home. Lawshe portrays the voices of the other characters with similar evenness, capturing their patience and love for Eliza as they help her assimilate into her new life.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
