A new quartet of “ailing” women seeks to relieve their problems at The Hot Spa, a wellness center. While the women’s ages vary widely, similar problems--in-laws--bring these flawed women together. Grandmother Polly’s daughter-in-law is keeping her away from her grandchild. Beth must fight her significant other’s family, who favor his high school sweetheart. Pregnant Carolyn’s high blood pressure rises when her rich father marries a ditsy fortune hunter. And Julia’s husband’s ex-mother-in-law is out to destroy her marriage. While this title is not as compelling as Thayer’s first Hot Spa novel, Wendy Dillon enlivens the antics with her “between-us-girls” narration.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
