Nene Nwoko, born and raised in Nigeria, is a natural choice for narrating this audiobook. This is the third installment in Okorafor’s Nsibidi Scripts trilogy. When Sunny moved from New York to Nigeria in AKATA WITCH, she discovered her heritage—membership in a secret magical community called the Leopard People. Now 16, she and her friends are on a quest to save the world, aided by juju, magic grounded in Nigerian folklore and mythology. Nwoko’s Nigerian accents lend authenticity to this engaging story, and she also subtly uses them to differentiate characters. Her deliberate pace may aid with the different cadences of the accents. Prior experience with the series would enrich the story but is not essential.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
