PATTERNMASTER

PATTERNIST, BOOK 4

The final installment in the Patternist series is actually the author's first novel, originally published in 1976. Robin Miles narrates the series. In the distant future, the world has evolved such that the Patternists are now the dominant culture. They use their telepathic powers to rule and enslave "lesser" beings. Two brothers, Coransee and Teray, vie to become the designated successor of their father, the Patternmaster. Narrating in the third person from Teray's point of view, Miles adopts a conversational tone. She conveys the solitude of a man who has never had a close friend. She effectively contrasts Teray's naïveté with the arrogance and self-assurance of Coransee, who is 11 years older. As Teray learns the breadth of his own powers, Miles expresses his growing confidence.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
