Step Fletcher takes a job with a small software company, which means moving his family to North Carolina. The adjustment isn’t easy for Step, and it’s increasingly difficult for 8-year old Stevie, who can’t understand his teacher’s Southern drawl and becomes the object of her scorn. Stefan Rudnicki finds a voice for each of the main characters, capturing the personalities of the children as well as the adults. He uses accents judiciously to reinforce the differences between Step’s family and the people in the town they’re trying to make their home. As Stevie’s world of imaginary friends continues to expand, his parents realize that it is keeping pace with the list of boys missing from the town. This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
