by Paco Underhill ; read by Adam Barr , Aden Hakimi & Karissa Vacker ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 4, 2022
Adam Barr adeptly narrates most of this informed and informative audiobook, capturing its immediacy with his tone and cadence. Barr has a resonant voice and paces the many stories--personal and professional--that shape this engaging work. Narrators Aden Hakimi and Karissa Vacker do fine work, too. The conversational style draws the listener into this insider's guide. Author Underhill, a food consultant, has decades of experience studying shoppers' buying and eating habits. He takes the listener through the business of selling food--from mega-stores to farmers markets. We are all buying more prepared meals, as the pandemic has accelerated home delivery from restaurants and supermarkets. He gazes into the future, predicting vertical farms in supermarket parking lots, where the consumer will buy fresh hydroponically grown veggies.

The readers can't compensate for the unbearably pompous prose style of this extended parable about corporate politics and strategy.

This audiobook deals with everything from the historic investments that led to world-dominating companies, such as the Chinese technology company Tencent, to predicting the products and services of the future. An audiobook of such complexity requires a narrator who can handle the task, and David Thorpe manages it admirably. Thorpe uses his masterly voice, which sits somewhere between that of a BBC World Service presenter and an easy, relaxed Home Counties accent, to guide listeners through a sea of numbers, acronyms, and terms such as YP, RPS, and market cap. Rather than simply reading, Thorpe presents the work with excitement and enthusiasm, and this enjoyment transfers to the listener.
